April Fools is usually a time for fun and pranks and mischief. However, this year finds little to take lightly, as the coronavirus is impacting every aspect of our lives. Governments have let us down at every level, and our “leaders” and we find ourselves grossly uninformed and unable to respond responsibly. We’re trying desperately to catch up, while too many lives are being sacrificed for this negligence. Our healthcare workers are our frontline heroes, but our journalists are our critical connection to the facts and truth. Join me as I make the case for our being better informed, and modeling that for others, while we support the journalists that are key to a free and healthy democracy.

Leadership Austin is celebrating its 40th anniversary and it has much to celebrate. The program, initially sponsored by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, has identified, trained and placed hundreds of well-trained and motivated “community trustees” throughout the community. The expanding alumni base can be found in prominent leadership positions in Austin government, non-profits, business and education. As an alum myself, I can attest to the importance of the program in nurturing a leadership base that can leverage many constructive resources. I’m proud to join others in celebrating this notable anniversary. CONGRATS, LEADERSHIP AUSTIN!

Creative expression can enhance/save your life. It has mine. In “The Artist’s Way,” Julia Cameron observes that we’re all gifted, but many of us never realize our gifts. Many blocks, real and imagined, often keep us from fully realizing, or even identifying our creative possibilities. There are many tools and paths that can open our hearts, minds and spirit to a fuller, more colorful and rewarding life. Join me as I discuss these options, and relate how I’ve sought to walk the talk. It’s never too late to explore your creative potential. Your Friend in the Mirror will thank you, and your family and friends will be glad you considered, “Who ya gonna be, when you get to be you?”

Truth, facts and science have been under attack of late, but help is on the way. It may take some Superheroes to turn the tide, but I’m aware of an abundance of prospects. As usual, our champions will come from our Friends in the Mirror and our Better Angels. We are called to be stewards of the Truth. To be well-informed ourselves, to encourage and model the same for others, while promoting CIVIL discussions relative to the issues of the day. Most folks of all ideologies want better than the mindless, stressful tribalism and political dysfunction that has typified the past three years. We can/must do better…TOGETHER.

This Country and State are in desperate need of responsible leaders, in all areas of civic life. The shameful display of government dysfunction at many levels should be sufficient motivation for us to rise to our occasion. As I pen this, I’ve got several positive leadership images, including Adm. William McRaven, Leadership Austin and some outstanding Austin civic leaders. Washington makes the most noise, but civic problem solving at the local levels will have the most impact. And effective leaders will become our CIVIC HEROES. Let’s join them. Read on…
