We’ve had a challenging two years, but there are hopeful signs that the worst is behind us. People are hurting, but people are helping. Our Better Angels far outnumber those in the political bully pulpit. We’ve learned a lot, and realize the tremendous leverage of working positively together. Let’s give ourselves some breaks, learn to lighten up and make the most of this last month of another dysfunctional year. Let’s laugh and cry and love and care… TOGETHER. Wow, What a year! Of Covid-19, too much nasty politics, and we Texans got a bad freeze as our love tap reminder from Mama Nature. But, we learned things. I’ve considered priorities, focused on music, writing and community service, and am concentrating on how I might best nurture and share my gifts. The program, initially sponsored by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, has identified, trained and placed hundreds of well-trained and motivated “community trustees” throughout the community. The expanding alumni base can be found in prominent leadership positions in Austin government, non-profits, business and education. As an alum myself, I can attest to the importance of the program in nurturing a leadership base that can leverage many constructive resources. While we can strive to remain immature, as I try to model, we can’t stop the aging process. Our aches and pains attest to that reality. Another reality is that aging ain’t what it used to be, and there are many pills, potions, exercise regimens and innovative programs specifically designed to address those of us who are slightly beyond our midlife crisis stage. I recently had the opportunity to participate in a conference that dramatically opened my eyes, heart and mind to a new age of aging possibilities.
