My Mining Pan Discovery
I found this old rusted mining pan while on a Colorado mountain hiking adventure. It caught my attention, then caught my imagination. I found it a perfect metaphor for my life at the time. The hole in the pan enabled a smattering of gold dust to be collected, but no larger nuggets could be captured until the hole was patched. Wow! It took minimal reflection for me to get it. In heart and mind and perspective. I quickly realized how this applied to my life. I’ve been glad to share this story as I’ve had the opportunity.
We’ve Got Lots Of Holes To Patch
Our world seems as dysfunctional and distrustful as I’ve experienced in my lifetime. Too many of us have lost faith in each other, our institutions, our governments and our future. We’re fearful for our children, but unsure as to how we can chart a more hopeful course. We must earn/rebuild trust if we’re to strengthen the foundation of democracy. We’ve got holes to patch. While cultivating Peace and Respect.
Trust must be earned. We’ve got unlimited opportunities to practice the values of our Better Angels. To patch holes where needed. The pandemic forced us to revisit the models of how we operate in the world… In our homes, offices, non-profits, faith-based organizations, schools, governance and extended communities. WE THE PEOPLE hold the keys to the direction of progress. We’ve stumbled a lot in recent years, and recovered erratically and inequitably. But every waking hour presents more opportunities for us to make a positive difference. Patch more holes.
Nothing To See Here
Gaza, Maine, Ukraine, Uvalde, natural disasters, governing incompetence at many levels. Can feel/seem overwhelming. Most of this is not rocket science…good ideas just need leadership, organization and some rocket propulsion to effect significant change…patching holes where possible. It starts with our friend in the mirror. Shining our lights in our corner of the world. Expanding our reach where our resources allow.
From Me To We
Too many of us have become self-centered… distracted by our gadgets, oblivious to opportunities to be better citizens, neighbors, community role models and thoughtful voters. And our children follow our examples. Until we’re forced to get out of our heads, lead with our hearts and model our better nature…with a healthy dose of kindness. From ME to WE!
SO!
Look for opportunities to patch holes. Volunteer. Donate to worthy causes, significantly where possible. Help your neighborhood schools. Support elected reps who are making a difference. Get to know folks who are different from you. Be a good neighbor. Do you know your neighbors? Support the creative arts. Seek to be better informed. Always make time to be silly and have fun (embarrass your children and friends)… be good to yourself…BE KIND…You’ll be naturally patching holes through your thoughtful efforts. Start Now.
